TRAINING A CHILD Skip to main content

A story of my confused state

2018, I moved to Ogun state and had to seek employment in a school within my vicinity. As a Lagos teacher, I was used to a vibrant class, swift answers and mushy acts by my students. So I resumed at my new work place with that fully charged energy. The first day got me confused. I was to teach the primary classes, I started my class and it was obvious these children were not following. They could neither understand what I was saying nor did they show any bit of interest. It was then I knew I had to start from the scratch. First, I had to create a connection. I wanted them to understand that I am first their friend. I needed to set the foundation that they can have both a friend and teacher in one. After that, I came down to their level. I made them feel and appreciate every little progress they made. I built up their interest in education. We worked together, applying several strategies I discovered and created, and within some month the growth was evident. Eureka is a book that ...

TRAINING A CHILD

Its no longer news that children aren't trained in the way they ought to go but in the way their parents deem it fit for them to go.
Before a child is born, parents have concluded on the path/career of the child and when he is born, he has no option than follow their path like a dummy least the society tags him a disobedient child.

I was discussing with a couple days ago and I raised the topic of training a child.
I told them children should in the way they should go not the way their parents want them to go.
I was taken aback by their response

"So we should allow him become wayward abi, he should do whatever he wants to do..."

Pro 22:6 "Train up a child IN THE WAY HE SHOULD GO and when he is old he won't depart from it."
IN THE WAY HE SHOULD GO not IN THE WAY YOU WANT HIM TO GO.

Let me explain better with this illustration.

A pencil marker was invented for the purpose of colouring drawings on paper, you bought it and without reading the manual you concluded it should be used on a board which is totally outside its purpose.

Almighty God our creator has designed a path/purpose for us, we as parents have a crucial role to play when a child is born.
We are to discover the path/purpose of that child and lead them.

I heard of a footballer who noticed his son likes hitting objects with sticks.
He immediately enrolled him in hockey classes.
He didn't say "Son, you've got to be a footballer".

When training a child you have to pay attention to the qualities, likes and dislikes of each child.

God knows training isn't an easy job, training can either make or destroy an individual.
No wonder the bible says TRAIN UP A CHILD and not TRAIN UP CHILDREN.
He knows every child have their different abilities and characters, you don't use the same stroke on each child least you mare their destiny.
You don't use the same cloth measurement for children and believe it would fit them all.
Some kids are fat, some slim, others tall or short.
So it is with training, not all training works on children. You have to discover what works best.

We need the help of God when training a child
He created them and He has their manual.
Training a child would require you to sacrifice a lot.
Training a child can be too demanding.
If one isn't careful training a child can lead such child astray.

If you don't know God you need Him
He is the only one you can turn to regarding issues concerning your children.
Any training outside God is faulty.
He has the manual
He alone can direct.
Accept Him today.

MY TALENT, MY PRIDE( DISCOVER YOURSELF)

Bola,Tayo, Ayo amd Bimpe where very close friends. they are the type of kids every parents would always pray to have. Bola was a very talented singer, she sings like an angel and everyone adores her. Tayo too was a good dancer, he is so flexible that one would wonder if his body where made of foam. Ayo wasn't left out, he was so good with spellings, he could spell words those older than him would find difficult spelling. Bimpe felt like the odd one out,"why am i the one without a talent"she would always say to herself. whenever she went out with her friends for talents audition she would always feel left out because she has nothing to present. she would always cry her eyes out sometimes wishing she was her friends. she envied her friends talents and most times prayed to God to make her a singer, dancer or a good speller. when she saw her prayers have been ignored by God she started attending dance and music classes, she would always go to her friend Ayo to teach ...

HOW TO COPE WITH SLOW LEARNERS

I remember my first experience with a slow learner. At first I thought he was just lazy but later I realised it wasn't laziness. He was always quite, doesn't answer questions in class and rarely relate with his peers. Within months of my stay in the school I started noticing some changes in my boy. He now attempts assignment and classwork given. He talks in class and now relates well with his classmates. The trick is to first make them feel safe in class rather than make your expectations a burden to them. Over the years I've had to teach slow Learners and it has been a wonderful experience. The link below is a podcast where I talked on how to cope with Slow Learners. It's a ten minutes audio that summarizes strategies you can put in place when you have a slow learner in class. If you have questions, I'll be glad to answer them. https://anchor.fm/MissDairo%20/episodes/How-to-cope-with-Slow-Learners-ef5bj4 Don't forget to leave a comment and share w...
